Course Description
In the 21st Century, and its global economy, the art of planning is critical to the future focus of organizations. Performing at a higher level is now paramount to organizational longevity. Often times there is need for split second decision making.

This course is designed to build on concepts of the previous week and expects interaction and furthering of the knowledge among the participants through theory to application case studies. Readings will consist of Strategic Management text and case studies from that text.

Outcome
Participants will be able to build construct case models around the concepts covered within the course and present a strategic business prescription within a case study. Participants will also gain knowledge from other participant applications within the course through email discussion threads.


Assessment
Assessment will consist of weekly application participation. Participants will contribute their thoughts in email discussion threads and case study analysis. Final assessment will center around strategic case studies and one final case prescriptive paper of 8 - 10 pages.

Outline

  1. Topics will include Mission, Goals, Organization/Situational Analysis. Introduction to case study #1. Text Reading is: Strategic Management, Chapters 1 - 4. Case Study is found in text on pages 2-3. Participants should email their analysis of the case to the instructor.

  2. Topics of Functional and Business level strategies. Participant discussion contribution around case study #2. Written prescriptive paper of 4 - 6 pages on case study #2. Text Reading is: Strategic Management, Chapters 5- 7. Case Study is found in text on pages 213. Participants should email their analysis of the case to the instructor.

  3. Topics include Global strategy and Corporate-level strategy. Text Reading is: Strategic Management, Chapters 8 - 10. Participants will now be using the Case Study Analysis format as found in the text on pages C2 - C14. Case Study (AOL) is found in text on pages C109 - C119. Participants should email their analysis of the case to the instructor.

  4. Topics include Strategy Implementation, including Organizational Structure and Systems thinking. Text Reading is: Strategic Management, Chapters 11 & 12. Case Study is found in text on pages C155 - C166. Participants should email their analysis of the case to the instructor.

  5. Topics include the managing of strategic change. Text Reading is: Strategic Management, Chapters 13 & 14. Final Case Study is choice of participants own organization or the Tyco case found in text on pages C494 - C512. Participants should email their final case analysis/prescriptive paper due, 8 - 10 pages.
